Kissing in the Rain

“Where are you going?”

He thought I wouldn’t notice as he slipped out the door. Boy, was he wrong.

“Just meeting the guys for dinner,” Graham said. I knew from how fast the words spilled out of his mouth that it was a lie.

“Which guys?”

“Um…you know...” He was busy tying his shoes. “Just Chris and Brett.”

Bullshit. Graham was wearing his nicest sweater and he reeked of cologne. This wasn’t going to be a “hanging out with the boys” kind of night for him.

But I didn’t feel like arguing. “Okay, have fun,” I said. “And it’s going to rain, so don’t forget your umbrella.”

“It’s in the car,” he said. “All right, Leah, see you later!”

He rushed out the door before I could give him a goodbye kiss. I hovered near the front window, watching him get into his car and drive off quickly. Dark clouds were rolling in. That was exactly how I felt right now — dark and stormy.

He’d been acting so differently since the night he hung out with Mina. Whenever I asked him how it went, and whether he was trying to steal my best friend, Graham got quiet and evasive. There was something he was keeping from me.

Of course, deep down, I knew exactly what was going on. My husband had a crush on my best friend. And it seemed more and more likely that she had a crush on him, too. Mina, “Little Miss Perfect,” would never admit such a thing. However, she was taking forever to respond to my texts, and she had suddenly stopped reaching out to me first. She said she was busy with her new classes. I didn’t believe her.

I closed the blinds and tried to make myself busy. I was at a total loss here. In a weird way, I wondered if this was my fault — I had asked for an open marriage, and now my husband and best friend were sneaking around behind my back. Did I deserve to be treated this way because I was “slutty” and liked watching Graham fuck other women?

I blinked back tears and turned my phone off. I didn’t want to text either of them, although I had a million questions. I spent the evening trying not to imagine Graham and Mina sharing sweet, flirtatious, or — even worse — erotic moments together.
